A ceramic coating sits on your factory clear coat as a film of about three microns. ICON Rocklear goes on at 63 microns in one pass. Both are drawn here on the same panel, on the same ruler, so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.
That depth is what makes the rest of it work. There is enough material on the panel to polish a scratch out of the coating instead of cutting into your paint to reach it.

Preparation and application run as a seven part process, in a bay where contamination, temperature and humidity are all controlled. That control is why one certified shop's result matches the next one's.
Underneath it is I.C.E., our Interlocking Coating Enforcement layer, introduced in 2023. It adds depth and strength to the finish without cutting into your clear coat, and it is what lets a technician correct the coating later instead of stripping it back.
Your car goes in for a day and is ready the next. Full cure takes 30 days and you drive it the whole time. The coating cures in ambient temperatures from -40°C to +40°C.

Aluminium was epoxied to a coated panel and pulled. The paint left the metal before the coating left the paint.

A weighted dart dropped onto a coated panel, with no coating failure at the recorded load.

Accelerated exposure run to completion with no change in appearance.

Continuous salt fog with no visible change. Ontario salts its roads five months a year.

A one eighth inch bend at 180 degrees was put through a coated panel. No cracking.
A key was dragged across a half coated panel, starting on bare paint and carrying on across the coating. The bare side showed a clear scratch. On the coated side it was barely visible.
Spectrometer readings were taken at an 85 degree angle over a five year old painted surface. Because the coating goes on thick, it magnifies the depth of the paint underneath.
Vinyl wrap and paint protection film were applied over a cured panel and adhered normally. The coating can also be painted over without stripping it first.
A damaged panel was corrected by a technician, then re-coated over the existing layer without removing the base.
Full cure at 30 days, in ambient temperatures from -40°C to +40°C. One inspection within 18 months keeps the warranty active, and there are no yearly re-coats after it.

It is its own category. ICON Rocklear was engineered in 2016 and reformulated most recently in 2023, and it is built to do three jobs at once: protect the paint, cover what is already wrong with it, and stay easy to clean. Ceramic coatings came out of the early 2000s and have stayed close to their original brief, which is water beading and easier washing.
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people choose it. ICON Rocklear goes over damaged paint and covers swirls, scuffs, faded paint and light scratches, while thickening a clear coat that has gone thin. With a ceramic coating the paint has to be corrected first, and correction takes clear coat off the car. ICON Rocklear adds material instead of removing it.
Regular car soap and water. No clay bars, no waxes, no sealants, no ceramic toppers. Wait seven days before the first wash and 30 days before anything presses hard on the surface. Wash by hand with a mitt and two buckets where you can, and a touchless automatic wash is fine. The foam brush at a self serve bay is worth avoiding whether you have a coating, film, or nothing at all, because it carries grit from every car before yours.
Your coating needs one inspection within 18 months of the install to keep the warranty active. That is the only scheduled service, and there are no yearly re-coats to buy after it. Many owners book the inspection at the 30 day mark, once the coating has fully cured, and set it up then.
Fifteen years on automotive paint against bond failure, premature fading, peeling, cracking and yellowing, and seven years on marine gelcoat. Stone chips, collision damage and damage from brush car washes sit outside it. Every certified installer also warranties their own workmanship for life, and that workmanship cover travels with the owner.
Usually. Most scratches in the coating are corrected on the panel by a certified technician, and in the worst case the panel is re-coated over the existing layer without stripping it back. Minor swirl marks from washing often come out in a single stage polish.
ICON Rocklear was impact tested to ASTM D2794 at 120 in/lbs, so it takes far more of a hit than a thin coating will. Stone chips are still stone chips, and they sit outside what the coating warranty covers.
Paint protection film is a separate product, made by other companies, and it is the specialist one for chips. It goes on top of ICON Rocklear rather than instead of it: film laid over the coating picks up the depth underneath, and the coating keeps guarding the paint if that film ever comes off. Vinyl wrap and decals work the same way, and the coating can be painted over without stripping it back.
