Two seasons, two different problems.
Highway 403 runs from Woodstock through Brantford and on east to Ancaster, and it is salted hard from November into April. Brine at freeway speed does not stay on the tarmac, it atomises and settles on rocker panels, lower doors and the back of every mirror.
Then the season turns and the same vehicles are on Brant County roads instead. The county lays a tar and chip surface treatment on its low-volume roads through the summer, and a road that has just been treated throws loose stone and soft tar for weeks afterwards. ICON Rocklear is 63 microns bonded into the factory paint, so what a Brantford vehicle picks up in either season meets the coating first.
- 63 microns bonded into the factory paint, built in one application
- Salt spray and abrasion sit among the 12 independent ASTM methods behind it
- A scratch is corrected or re-coated on the panel, not stripped back
- 15 years on painted exterior surfaces, 7 years on marine gelcoat
Salted 403. Gravel concessions.

Brantford, road by road.
Five months of brine on the 403
There is no quiet back route across this county. If you work in Woodstock, Ancaster or the far end of the corridor, you are on the 403, and from November to April it is treated the whole way. A vehicle that commutes it carries salt on every lower panel by Christmas.
Salt spray is one of the third-party ASTM methods behind this coating. It bonds into the paint rather than sitting on top of it, so nothing has to be stripped off and put back on when the roads dry out in the spring.
Fresh surface treatment on the county roads
The County of Brant works its way through the low-volume roads every summer, replacing or renewing the tar and chip surface, and the concessions either side of the Grand River that have not been done yet are gravel.
That is a scouring film rather than a single event, and it is why a rural Brant vehicle can look older than its odometer reads. Anything serious can be corrected or re-coated on the panel, and our technicians can usually do it on site.
Down in the Grand River valley
Paris sits ten minutes north of the city where the Nith runs into the Grand, and the roads down into the valley are shaded, damp and slow to dry. Leaf litter, river mist and winter grit all sit on paint longer here than they would on open highway.
One inspection within 18 months keeps the 15-year automotive warranty active. Nothing else is scheduled after that, and there are no yearly re-coats to buy.
Getting to the bay from around Brant
The Brantford installer serves Paris, St. George, Burford, Mount Pleasant, Scotland and Cainsville, and picks up the western end of the corridor as far out as Woodstock.
For anyone in Brant who was making the drive east for this work, Brantford is the shorter trip. Further along the 403, Hamilton takes the Ancaster and escarpment end of the same road.
